The Lovers Banyan Tree, one of the most iconic trees in the Gardens of Quinta das Lágrimas, has secured second place in the prestigious European 'Tree of the Year 2025' competition. With 43,427 votes, this majestic centenary fig tree stood out among 15 finalists, being recognized not only for its grandeur and beauty but also for its historical significance and connection to the legendary love story of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro.

The 'Tree of the Year' competition, established in 2011, annually celebrates trees with significant stories, raising awareness of the importance of preserving natural heritage. The 2025 edition featured 15 emblematic trees from different countries, with online voting taking place from February 3 to 24.

The Lovers Banyan Tree: A Symbol of Memory and Beauty

The Lovers Banyan Tree, belongs to the species Ficus macrophylla, native to Australia. Planted in the 19th century by an aristocrat passionate about botany, it was brought to the Gardens of Quinta das Lágrimas through a seed exchange with the Sydney Botanic Gardens. Over more than 150 years, this tree has become a true symbol of resilience and charm, growing next to the Fountain of Love, a setting that witnessed the tragic romance between King Pedro I and Inês de Castro.

The first place in the competition was awarded to the tree "Heart of the Dalkowskie Hills" from Poland, which received 147,553 votes, while third place went to "Pino de Juan Molinera" from Spain, with 36,873 votes.
